Carnival in Nerja general information

The Nerja Carnival is one of the most anticipated events of the year. With its lively parades, creative costumes and energetic atmosphere, the carnival attracts both locals and visitors from all over the world. The carnival is a tradition that blends the rich culture of Andalusia with a dose of humor and creativity, making it a unique experience.

What can you expect from the carnival in Nerja?

The Carnival in Nerja is traditionally held in the days before Lent begins and culminates in the grand parade, él Gran Desfile de Carnaval. During this parade, the streets of the city are filled with festive processions of costumed groups, musicians and dancers. The creativity of the participants is impressive; from glittering costumes to humorous and socially critical themes, anything is possible.

Another highlight is the "Entierro del Chanquete" (“Burial of the Chanquete”), a symbolic ceremony that marks the end of the festivities. This tradition is unique to Nerja and involves the fictitious burial of a small fish (Chanquete), which is often accompanied by humor and theatrical mourning.
