Intro to hiking trails in Nerja

Marie-Michelle Boende i Nerja

Nerja, located on Spain's sunny Costa del Sol, is not only known for its beautiful beaches and picturesque white houses, but also for its fantastic hiking trails that attract nature lovers from near and far. Surrounded by the impressive Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara y Alhama Natural Park, the area offers a variety of trails that will suit both beginners and experienced hikers.

We have preferred to hike in autumn, winter and spring, but if you want to hike in water/the river, such as Rio de Chillar, it is perhaps best to hike in the summer when it is nice to have your feet cold in the fresh water or dip in one of the small "pools" or "pozos" that form along the river further up.

1. Río Chíllar Route

Please note, we have contacted the tourist information office in Nerja and the town hall but have not received any information on when it will reopen. Rio Chillar has been officially closed to the public since COVID, but we hope it will reopen soon!

One of the most popular hikes in Nerja is the Río Chíllar hike. This unique experience involves hiking directly in the riverbed, surrounded by high canyons and cooling waterfalls. The route is relatively easy and suitable for families, but be prepared to get your feet wet! During the hot summer months, this hike offers a refreshing break from the heat.

We recommend wearing sneakers even if you can expect them to get wet, because the hike is partly in the riverbed on round stones. Some people buy swimming shoes and this is suitable if you don't have very sensitive feet or don't have to go that far up the river.

Also expect to walk a bit before the riverbed fills with water and bring some snacks and water to keep your energy up.

2. El Cielo (The Top of Heaven)

For those looking for a more challenging hike, El Cielo, at 1,508 meters above sea level, is an excellent choice. This peak, which means "The Sky" in Spanish, offers stunning panoramic views of the Mediterranean Sea and the surrounding landscape. The hike is demanding and takes about four hours one way, but the reward at the top is well worth the effort. Note that the final stretch up is very steep.

3. Frigiliana from Nerja

The charming village of Frigiliana, known for its narrow, cobbled streets and whitewashed houses, is just a few kilometres from Nerja. A popular walking trail connects the two towns, taking you through the Andalusian countryside, past olive groves and with spectacular views of the coast. This moderately difficult route is perfect for a day trip.

4. Navachica

As the highest peak in the Sierra Almijara, Navachica stands at 1,831 metres. The hike to the top is strenuous and recommended for experienced hikers, but the views over both the Málaga and Granada provinces are outstanding. The route often starts from the El Pinarillo recreational area and passes through varied terrain, including dry riverbeds and forested paths.

5. Maro-Cerro Gordo Cliffs

For a coastal hiking experience, the Maro-Cerro Gordo Nature Reserve offers spectacular rock formations and hidden coves. The trails vary in difficulty and length, allowing hikers to choose a route that suits their fitness level. During the hike, you can enjoy the rich flora and fauna as well as the stunning views of the Mediterranean Sea.

When hiking in Nerja

Before you set out on any of these hikes, it's important to be well prepared. Make sure you bring enough water, appropriate equipment, and inform someone of your plans. Nerja's hiking trails offer a unique opportunity to experience Andalusia's natural beauty up close.
