Weather in Nerja in winter

In most years the weather in Nerja during December and January has been absolutely fantastic. Many days have offered sunshine, clear skies and temperatures that have made it possible to even lie on the beach. That very contrast, leaving the darkness and cold of the north and being met by the sun and light of the Mediterranean, is one of the reasons why I try to spend as much time as possible in Nerja during the winter.

Weather during Christmas and New Year 2025/2026

I have celebrated Christmas and New Year in Nerja every year since 2015. During all these years, the winters here in southern Spain have been something I have really appreciated, mild temperatures, many sunny days and a climate that has felt like early summer in Sweden, so the winter of 2025/2026 has stood out. It has been experienced both colder and rainier than I have been used to in previous years.

January is the coldest month

According to established weather sources, January is the coldest month in Nerja. Normally, daytime temperatures in winter are around 9–15 degrees, with average daytime temperatures of around 13–14 degrees. However, the experience when the sun is out (which it usually is) is a daytime temperature of around 20 degrees. The nights are cooler and in combination with high humidity and cloud cover, the cold can feel more harsh.

At the time of writing, January 7, the weather forecast looks like this, so things are looking bright ahead!

Rain in Nerja

Rain is not uncommon during the winter in Nerja, even though it is usually "stuck" up in the mountains and Nerja usually has bright sunshine.

December and January are among the months that statistically have the most rainy days. It is rarely constant rain, without a shower at night or part of the day and a little cloudy now and then, as I said, it is usually stuck up in the mountains. In terms of climate data, the winter of 2025/2026 is within what is considered normal for the region, but perhaps the rain has made it over the mountain ridge a little more often this year than before?

For me, the experience of Christmas and New Year 25/26 was - more continuous days of clouds, more rain than I remember from previous winters and fewer really sunny days, and when the sun is gone the temperature drops, especially in the afternoons and evenings, making it more muggy. During Christmas and New Year 2025/2026, an umbrella and jacket have been more useful to me than in previous years.

But - the sunny moments enjoyed at a cafe or on the terrace have felt like "summer sun" and I have been able to enjoy "summer moments" in the winter even this year.

Summary of weather for Christmas and New Year 2025/2026

In summary, the weather statistics show that Christmas and New Year 2025/2026 in Nerja are within the normal climate range for the region. At the same time, I have experienced it as colder and rainier than in the last 10 years.

The moments when the sun has peeked out have been absolutely wonderful. When the clouds have parted, Nerja has shown exactly the side that makes me return as often as I can. The light, the sea and the gentle warmth of the sun make a big difference! The sunny hours have been a reminder of why winter in southern Spain is worth experiencing and how much a few hours of sun can change both the temperature and the feeling in the body.

We would love to hear how you experienced the weather in Nerja during Christmas and New Year!
